Fauna

Designing a platform for wildlife education

Product Design | Mobile App Concept

Context

Overview

Designed and researched a platform focused on wildlife education and conservation. This project explores how technology and user-centered design can enhance engagement with nature.

About Fauna

Fauna is a wildlife app designed to help users discover and engage with local wildlife. More than just an educational tool, it’s a community-driven platform where users can share wildlife sightings and contribute to promoting interest in nature.
The idea for Fauna emerged from the lack of awareness about nature conservation in Singapore. The app aims to bridge this gap by fostering learning and engagement, encouraging users to explore and appreciate local wildlife.

Research

Objectives

My primary goal was to research how technology can be used to promote wildlife education and foster interest in the field.

User Interviews

To understand how people currently engage with wildlife, I conducted open-ended interviews with 10 individuals. From this, I identified three key themes that shaped the design approach.

Persona & Journey Map

Created a user persona based on research findings to better understand the target audience for my design.
Alongside the user persona, I also created a user journey map that outlines the user's challenges and experiences in detail.

Competitive Analysis

Conducted a competitive analysis of similar products identified during user interviews to identify existing solutions and gather insights on what worked.
Apps participants used to learn about wildlife

Design

Core Experience Loop

Based on user needs and behaviors, I outlined an experience loop designed to engage users whenever they encounter and learn about a new wildlife species.

Login Flow

The homepage serves as a central hub for users to explore featured wildlife and stay informed about upcoming events.

Habitat Flow

The habitat feature allows users to explore popular nature areas, providing insights into the local wildlife inhabiting these areas.
Additionally, users can access a community-driven repository of wildlife sightings within these locations, fostering a sense of shared discovery.

Library Flow

The library feature grants users access to an organized repository of wildlife information, categorized by animal groups and species types.

This curated resource enhances user exploration, making it easy for them to delve into specific areas of interest and deepen their understanding of diverse wildlife species.
The wildlife page also allows users to identify unknown insects with key diagnostic features. Users can also see all community sightings and nearby sighting for that species.

Additionally, users can explore a comprehensive list of community sightings and discover nearby sightings for the same species.

Identify & Record Flow

The scanning feature helps users identify wildlife effortlessly using their camera. Once identified, the app generates a curated list of potential matches, accompanied by relevant information about each species.
Users have the ability to share their wildlife sightings, accompanied by field notes and detailed information, creating a communal platform for knowledge exchange.

This feature enhances the app's collaborative nature, fostering a community-driven space where enthusiasts can contribute, learn, and appreciate the diverse array of wildlife encounters.
